Daily Devotional 6-18-20

Good morning church. This is Jeff Schuler. I’m one of the elders here at Arizona Community Church. And I wanted to bring a short message about Scripture and more specifically about how we can use the memorization of Scripture to help us in our daily walk. So in 2 Timothy 3:16, it says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training and righteousness.”

So specifically I want to talk about Scripture memory. So we know that God’s word is a treasure and that we should study it, that we should immerse ourselves in it and meditate on it. And so one of the aspects of this and a discipline of Christian life is to memorize that Scripture because it also becomes useful for us in our daily walk. As we walk through life, we’ll find situations where we may be anxious, tempted by something, angry… Whatever those may be, each one of us has different things that the enemy uses to trip us up. And by having Scripture already memorized to address those issues, we can actually have a tool, an offensive tool we can use against the devil

And so as an example, let’s say that you struggle with anxiety. Take your Bible app and go and search for anxiety and it’ll return a number of verses. You know, one of them would be Philippians 4:6, which says, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

So that’s a promise from Scripture. And if we memorize that in moments where we’re anxious, we can say those, and we can say it as a prayer to God and we’re actually praying the word back to God. And this is a very powerful technique that will allow us to use scripture to one, remind us of truth, but two, it also defeats the enemy. If we look at when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, when he responded to Satan, he quoted Scripture back to him.

So my encouragement for you is to take an issue that you struggle with. Just look something up in your Bible app or do a concordance search somewhere online. Find two or three verses that address that specifically and memorize them. Write them down on a note card and read them over and over again until you have them and when you feel those issues coming in. If it’s anxiety, if you feel anxiety coming on, repeat that verse over and over, repeated as a prayer and God will be faithful to relieve you from that.

The Bible is really good news for us and we can use it in our daily lives. It’s not just a book that we read and put back on a shelf.
