Daily Devotional 6-29-20

Well hey everybody, it’s pastor Bill. Well, things are pretty tough in our world right now. 2020 has not been an easy year. We’ve had a worldwide pandemic, high unemployment injustices happening in our society, and rioting in our streets. But imagine for a moment things getting so bad, you wish you had never been born. Or worse yet, imagine things getting so bad you actually look forward to the day that you die.

That’s incredible. Believe it or not, this happened to a man in the Bible, and that person was Job. In Job 3:11-21 (ESV), we read some pretty incredible things. In verse 11, Job says, “Why did I not die at birth, come out from the womb and expire?”. And then a little bit later down in verse 16, he says, “Or why was I not as a hidden stillborn child, as infants who never see the light?”

Wow, those are really sobering words. As a matter of fact, in verse 21, Job says he searches for death as a man searches for a hidden treasure.

But something really neat happens as you read the rest of the book of Job. Job comes to a greater and more mature understanding that God is in control, even when things seem out of control. On top of that, God has a purpose in everything, even when things are at their worst.

And there’s the message for each of us today, that we would grow in our understanding that when life is tough, God’s in control and he’s got a purpose.

Listen, 2020 has been a tough year, but I want to encourage you to take heart, look up, and know that God’s in control. He’s got a purpose, not only for what’s happening in the world, but what he’s doing with your life.

Take care, and God bless.
