It was in one of the previous devotionals that I mentioned that I had gone skydiving with my son for his birthday. And I think I recall telling you that was a scary moment. You know, as I revisit some other moments in my life that had me somewhat terrified, they would include a whitewater rafting on class five rapids in Alaska. They would include those rides some of us have taken on top of the hotels in Las Vegas. They would also include for me snorkeling off of the coast of Kauai and running into a seven-foot white tip reef shark with no barrier between us. Some of you, when I ask, what are the more scarier moments in your life that you faced, maybe you jettison from some of those trivial things that I just mentioned into I’m out of a job or I am struggling with a health issue. Either way, I think what happens in those moments is they capture our attention.

Good morning everyone. So good to be with you again. As an ancient history buff, I read one time that whenever an ancient army was victorious in battle, they would often take the spoils of war and parade them through their city. The commander would lead his troops on procession and there’d be clouds of incense wafting throughout the crowds and behind the processional at the tail end would be the prisoners of war walking solemnly. Some of them stumbling, perhaps wearing chains.

TRANSCRIPT

Most of us understand the definition of faith to be trusting in a trustworthy object. And I want to take a look at that definition by way of diving into a passage found in the book of Matthew. We’re going to be in chapter 14 and unlike a traditional word of encouragement where we go from the first verse all the way to the last, I wanted to take it kind of in the reverse order. And what I mean by that is I want to look at the last section of Matthew and then work our way forward. And in doing so, I think what the gospel writer gives to us are three implications or applications of how our faith defines us.
